Carolina remains on top after gritty 1-1 draw against debutant Lexington
Week 2 of the USL Super League saw two high intensity draws.
Carolina Ascent hosted Lexington SC as the club opened its Super League campaign. Lexington came out of the gates strong and immediately began producing chances in the attacking third. That relentlessness paid off as Lexington opened the scoring in the 48th minute off a header from Sydney Shepherd. But Carolina remained composed and answered with an emphatic long-range goal in the 76th minute courtesy of Mia Corbin.
Carolina stays in the top spot, but Lexington’s impressive performance on the road slots them into third place right after Dallas.
Tampa Bay Sun played DC Power to a nil-nil draw, but don’t let that scoreline fool you. Both teams had chances to pull ahead but were unable to capitalize. Riley Parker did manage to put the ball in the back of the net early in the match, but the goal was deemed offside. DC had the ability to put the match away in the 89th minute when the visitors were awarded a penalty; however, Ashley Orkus came up with her seventh save of the night to maintain the shutout.
Here’s how the full rankings look after Week 2:

Summary |
|
1 | Carolina Ascent FC (1-0-1) Week 3: @ BKN |
Last Week: 1 |
Carolina remains undefeated at home after an incredible second-half strike from Mia Corbin equalized against Lexington SC to secure a point. Carolina recorded 12 shots, more than double its shots in the team’s match last weekend.
2 | Dallas Trinity FC (0-0-1) Week 4: v. DC |
Last Week: 2 |
Dallas takes another week off from league play but will welcome FC Barcelona to the Cotton Bowl for a friendly this Friday. Trinity’s performance in Week 1 against Tampa remained as one of the best of the season thus far, keeping the team in the second spot.
3 | Lexington SC (0-0-1) Week 4: v. TB |
Last Week: Not Ranked |
Lexington secured a valuable point on the road against the current top of the table squad Carolina Ascent. Sydney Shepherd broke the deadlock early in the second half, marking the first goal in club history, and the attacking duo of Marykate McGuire and Kailey Utley will be one to watch.
4 | Fort Lauderdale United FC (0-0-1) Week 4: @ CAR |
1 Last Week: 3 |
Fort Lauderdale showed its grit last weekend when it came back from an early deficit to claim a point on the road against Spokane Zephyr. With another week to train and build chemistry before taking on Carolina in Week 4, Fort Lauderdale has potential to move up the rankings.
5 | Spokane Zephyr FC (0-0-1) Week 4: v. BKN |
1 Last Week: 4 |
Spokane will also have an additional week away from play before returning to action on September 8 against Brooklyn FC. A few defensive miscues plagued the squad in its opening match against Fort Lauderdale, but their ability to quickly move the ball up the field and get into their attack could be a problem for Brooklyn’s backline.
6 | DC Power FC (0-1-1) Week 4: @ DAL |
Last Week: 6 |
DC Power saw a significant improvement offensively from Week 1 to Week 2, going from five shots with none on target to 17 shots and seven on frame. However, the club is still struggling to finish in the final third and will need to find that connection before facing Dallas in another road contest on September 7.
7 | Tampa Bay Sun FC (0-0-2) Week 4: v. LEX |
2 Last Week: 5 |
When Tampa Bay is locked in like they were in the first half against DC Power, they look nearly unstoppable aside from an offside flag. But the second half was all DC, and if it wasn’t for goalkeeper Ashley Orkus, Tampa might have been the first home team putting a tally in the loss column.
Not Ranked | Brooklyn FC (0-0-0) Week 3: v. CAR |
Last Week: Not Rated |
Brooklyn FC will kick the season off in the coming week. |
