Dallas Trinity FC looked like it was on its way to a third consecutive draw on Saturday as it remained scoreless against Fort Lauderdale United FC with five minutes to go.
Then, a brilliant ball sent forward by Amber Brooks to Cyera Hintzen in the 87th minute that changed the game. Hintzen’s left-footed shot was saved by FTL UTD’s goalkeeper Makenna Gottschalk, but Sealey Strawn put away the rebound for the game-winner.
Strawn, a 17-year-old University of North Carolina commit, was one of four USL Super League players recently called up to a U.S. U-19 Women’s Youth National Team training camp last month. Saturday’s match was her first appearance since returning to the team. Just 20 minutes after coming on as a substitute, she became the youngest goalscorer in Super League history.
“I think when young players get the opportunity to be involved in international play and then come back into training, there’s always a bit of excitement and confidence,” Dallas Head Coach Pauline MacDonald said after the win. “Young players play without fear, and every time we’ve given Sealey an opportunity, she’s played without fear. I’m just so happy for her this evening.”
Strawn is the latest in a string of USL Academy players that have written their names in the Super League history book this season.
The Super League’s Academy standouts are also making waves outside the league. Dallas goalkeeper Evan O’Steen won the Golden Glove award and three other Super League players helped the U.S. earn bronze at this year’s U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Tampa Bay Sun FC’s Ella Martinez also played in the tournament with the Colombia National Team and scored Las Cafeteras’ opening goal in the 1-1 draw against South Korea.
The Academy pathway provides a clear route for these young players to earn quality minutes and gain professional experience early in their careers. That’s not just going to be good for the Super League, but for women’s soccer in the United States overall.

Brooklyn regains top spot, Tampa rises after first home win
Just as quickly as a team can be riding high and on a winning streak is as quickly as it can hit a wall and go into a slump. Brooklyn and Fort Lauderdale have been on both sides of this spectrum during the season and never at the same time.
Brooklyn started its campaign hot, going undefeated through its first four, earned just one point in the next four, then won its last three straight. On the other hand, Fort Lauderdale started slow, won three in a row, and has dropped its most recent three.
Both teams have switched up their starting lineups and tried new combinations of players up top, and they have yielded opposing results. For Brooklyn, including Dana Scheriff and Luana Grabias into XI and having Isabel Cox and Sam Rosette come off the bench has been effective and kept the team on the front foot for the full 90. For Fort Lauderdale, the cohesion hasn’t translated well, and the substitutions haven’t impacted the game in the same way.
The inaugural season for these teams will inevitably bring ebbs and flows, but how each squad responds to these challenges is something to keep an eye on before heading into the Winter Break.

Summary |
1 | ![]() |
Brooklyn FC (6-3-2) Week 12: — |
![]() Last Week: 2 |
Brooklyn is back at the top of the pack after earning its third straight win last week. Even while playing against one of the best possession-based teams in Spokane, Brooklyn extinguished all of the Zephyr’s offensive efforts while creating multiple of its own scoring opportunities. |
2 | ![]() |
Carolina Ascent FC (5-0-5) Week 12: vs SPK |
![]() Last Week: 1 |
Ten matches down, and the Ascent are still undefeated and undoubtably one of the best teams in the league. Carolina’s defense held solid against DC’s relentless attack, highlighted by a huge stoppage time save by Meagan McClelland, and Renée Guion slotted home the team’s first penalty kick for the game-winner. |
3 | ![]() |
Dallas Trinity FC (3-1-4) Week 12: @ LEX |
![]() Last Week: 3 |
Dallas was added to the list of teams to come away with wins after incredible late efforts by a teenage substitute after 17-year-old Sealey Strawn got on the end of a rebound in the 87th minute. The Trinity have looked more cohesive over the last few weeks and earned a well-deserved win at home. |
4 | ![]() |
Tampa Bay Sun FC (3-3-3) Week 12: @ FTL |
![]() Last Week: 8 |
Tampa Bay responded well to its last two losses with a strong 3-1 win on Saturday, earning its first home win of the season. The Sun needs to keep this form against a struggling Fort Lauderdale this weekend to put more space between them in the standings. |
5 | ![]() |
DC Power FC (2-5-4) Week 12: — |
![]() Last Week: 4 |
After Allie Flanagan’s brace last week, it looked like DC might have found some confidence and would keep up the shot conversion going forward. However, the team again failed to make anything out of its multiple chances in a match it probably could have won, especially after limiting Carolina to just two shots on target. |
6 | ![]() |
Spokane Zephyr FC (2-4-3) Week 12: @ CAR |
![]() Last Week: 5 |
The usual attack-minded Spokane Zephyr that is averaging 13 shots per game were completely thwarted by Brooklyn’s defense and managed only three shots and none on target. It was not the start the team needed to kick off the stretch of road matches, and now must face Carolina Ascent’s formidable defense next. |
7 | ![]() |
Lexington SC (2-6-2) Week 12: vs DAL |
![]() Last Week: 6 |
It looked like Lexington ran out of gas in the loss to Tampa Bay last weekend in a fairly equal contest that could have gone either way. Despite all the offensive creativity and success, Lexington’s defense will continue to hold the team back until it improves. |
8 | ![]() |
Fort Lauderdale United FC (3-4-1) Week 12: vs TB |
![]() Last Week: 7 |
FTL UTD is floundering after losing its third straight match and being shut out for the first time this season. The lineup changes have not boded well in its last few, and all of the team chemistry we saw at the start of the season is nowhere to be seen. |

SPK – Marley Canales: It will be a battle in the midfield as Marley Canales has been the core of Spokane’s starting lineup this season. She scored the game-winner on Sunday for her first goal of the campaign.
