DC – Loza Abera: The Ethiopian striker was the spark behind DC’s comeback win, scoring a brace off the bench. Abera has the ability to change a game with her speed and skill, and she will be a challenge for Spokane’s backline. 

SPK – Ally Cook: The UCLA Bruin has filled in the No. 9 role perfectly for Zephyr all spring, and she’s now second on the team with five goals. Cook times her runs well and is clinical inside the box, and she is one of the main reasons why Spokane has made its playoff push the last few months.

FTL – Jasmine Hamid: If FTL wants to get back above the playoff line, it will need to be through Jasmine Hamid. The winger has nine goals, 38 shots and 17 chances created, and she is the biggest game-changer for this South Florida side.

  • Carolina has not played a match in two weeks. Its most recent result was a 5-2 win against Fort Lauderdale on April 26. Tampa Bay is coming off a 3-0 win over Lexington. 
  • Tampa Bay is the only team Carolina Ascent has not beaten this season. The Sun has a 2-0-1 record against Carolina, most recently winning 1-0 when the teams met in March. 
  • Carolina is on a six-match winning streak, while Tampa Bay has won five of its last six matches. 
  • With a win or draw, Carolina would clinch the Players’ Shield and hosting in the playoffs.

CAR – Mia Corbin: Corbin is tied at the top of the Golden Boot race with 12 goals and will look to extend her lead this weekend. The striker also leads the team with 47 shots, 26 shots on target and ranks second with 27 chances created. 

TB – Cecilie Fløe: The Danish international recorded two assists and a goal in the team’s 3-0 win over Lexington last week. Whether she is in the starting lineup or coming off the bench, her speed and composure on the ball strengthens Tampa Bay’s offense every game.

Super League Power Rankings – Week 32

DC plays spoiler against Dallas, picks up second win in a row 

Just because DC Power FC is eliminated from playoff contention, doesn’t mean the team can’t still shake up the standings. The home team battled back for a miraculous come-from-behind win against Dallas Trinity FC on Thursday, earning consecutive wins for the first time this season. 

Susanna Fitch and Loza Abera were the stars of the match, spearheading the comeback after DC went into a two-goal deficit before halftime. Abera entered as a second-half substitute and immediately cut the lead to one with a goal in the 54th minute. Less than 10 minutes later, Fitch got on the end of a rebound and equalized with her first goal of the year. The two scorers then combined in stoppage time, with Abera scoring the game-winner for DC’s second victory at Audi Field. 

Thursday match was just the second time a team came back from a 2-0 deficit to win the game. The victors of the first occurrence? Dallas Trinity. Oh, how the tables have turned.

5		 Saturday’s match was a tough result for Brooklyn, which looked like the better side for most of the night. One poor defensive decision and the inability to hold or extend the lead after going down a player might have cost the team its shot at the postseason.

7		 FTL UTD has picked up just three points in its last six matches, making its push to move above the playoff line even harder. Fortunately, the team had Week 32 off to regroup and focus on its final four matches, which need to all yield in points for FTL to move back to the top four.

6		 Dallas followed up its poor performance against Tampa Bay with an even more disappointing loss to DC Power last week. Trinity has now slipped out of the top two, temporarily losing the ability to host a playoff match if it was to clinch. With only two matches remaining, Dallas needs to turn things around and quickly.

8		 Goalkeeper Sarah Cox set the tone early with a penalty save in the third minute against Tampa Bay on Saturday. However, the Sun punished Lexington’s high backline and defeated the Girls in Green for the fourth time this season.

Denmark U-23 international’s late winner against DC Power maintained Tampa Bay’s push toward the postseason

In a close race to reach the inaugural USL Super League Playoffs, Tampa Bay Sun FC had built some momentum.

Coming off consecutive victories against rival Fort Lauderdale United FC and Lexington SC, the Sun headed to face a stagnant DC Power FC side looking for a third win on the spin.

In the first half at Audi Field, it didn’t look as though it would come to fruition. The Sun recorded only two shots as their hosts created the better chances. The visitors needed a spark.

Up stepped Cecilie Fløe.

Coming on as a halftime substitute, the Denmark U-23 international helped tilt the game in the Sun’s favor. Fløe came close to breaking the deadlocked game with 15 minutes to go as her header went just wide of the top-right corner of the net, but with time running out, she delivered the winner for the visitors.

Receiving a pinpoint ball forward by center back Vivianne Bessette into the right side of the penalty area, Fløe controlled on her chest before volleying a shot that clipped the inside of the right post before spinning into the left corner of the net, earning a vital three points.

“These women battled for each other all the way to the final whistle,” said Sun Head Coach Denise Schilte-Brown. “We’re hitting our stride at just the right time, and I couldn’t be prouder of this group.”

For her remarkable performance, Fløe is April’s Prinx Impact Sub of the Month, a new series highlighting key substitutions that have changed the course of a game for a side.

Tampa Bay has seen numerous players step up as substitutes over its inaugural season in the Super League. Fløe became the sixth player to score after coming on for the side, the most for any team in the league.

That’s helped the side make late impacts in games. The Sun are currently tied with Dallas Trinity FC in two notable categories, with each side having scored 10 goals in the final 15 minutes and stoppage time of games this season and with gained eight points from losing positions in the regular season.

With three games to play, those traits could stand the Sun in good stead as they bid for a top-four finish and a place in the postseason.

Welcome to the latest edition of the USL Super League Race to the Playoffs, where we provide weekly information on where teams stand in their bid to reach the 2025 USL Super League Playoffs.   

Last weekend’s matches saw Tampa Bay Sun FC pick up a huge win in a No. 2 vs. No. 3 matchup against Dallas Trinity FC even after going down a player due to a red card in the 25th minute. Brooklyn FC and Spokane Zephyr FC also came away with three points and remain tied for the final playoff spot. 

Now, let’s take a look at Week 32’s fixtures and how their outcomes can impact the playoff picture.

Dallas Trinity needs a win against DC this week after dropping points in an uncharacteristic loss to Tampa Bay last Sunday. Trinity now has only a one-point lead over the Sun, with both teams having three matches left on the calendar. Carolina Ascent FC is most likely to clinch the top spot in the standings, but finishing second and earning home-field advantage in the semi-final would be beneficial for both Dallas and Tampa Bay, as they each perform better in front of their home crowds.

Saturday’s first match between Brooklyn and Spokane will be one of the most important matches of the season for both clubs. Brooklyn’s postseason hopes are currently hanging in the balance, and a loss to Spokane along with a Tampa Bay win later in the night would eliminate it from contention. Meanwhile, Zephyr has just moved above the playoff line for the first time this season, and depending on the other two results from the week, a win could propel it to second place.

DAL – Athalie Palomo: The Irving, Texas native has immediately made an impact on Dallas since joining in early April. She brings speed and composure to the left back position and goes strong into tackles and 50/50 challenges.

SPK – Alyssa Bourgeois: The defender has been outstanding for Spokane, especially this spring. Bourgeois won 10 duels and five tackles, made five clearances and created two chances in the win against Lexington.

TB – Vivianne Bessette: Bessette is both a creator and defensive force for this Tampa Bay side. Even with the added pressure of playing down a man against Dallas last week, she still had nine clearances, three interceptions, two duels won and one chance created.

    • RED CARD: Tampa Bay captain Jordyn Listro was issued a red card in the 25’ for serious foul play. It was the first time a straight red was issued in a match this season and resulted in the Sun playing with 10 players for the rest of the match.

WEEK 32 STORYLINES

PLAYOFF PICTURE 
Carolina Ascent is the only team to secure a spot in the 2024/25 Super League Playoffs. The team has an opportunity to claim a top-two spot and earn home field advantage in the semi-finals this week if Lexington wins against Tampa Bay Sun.  

With teams 2nd-6th all within six points of each other, the final three spots are anyone’s game and likely will not be determined until the final week of the regular season. 

Additionally, Brooklyn would be eliminated from playoff contention this week if it loses to Spokane and if Tampa Bay wins against Lexington. 

2025/26 SCHEDULE 
The USL Super League unveiled this week the 2025/26 schedule for its first season as the Gainbridge Super League. A full slate of can’t-miss matchups kicks off Saturday, August 23, headlined by Sporting Jax’s highly anticipated home opener. The regular season will run through May 16, followed by a four-team playoff culminating in The Final the weekend of May 30.

100th SUPER LEAGUE MATCH 
Thursday’s matchup between DC Power FC and Dallas Trinity FC will be the Super League’s 100th match of the inaugural season.

Tampa Bay Sun FC’s Jordyn Listro has been suspended for one game following her red card for serious foul play against Dallas Trinity FC on May 4. Listro will be unavailable for selection in Tampa Bay’s contest against Lexington SC on Saturday night. 

Additionally, the following player enters the upcoming matches one caution away from their eighth yellow card of the season and a one-game suspension for caution accumulation.

Super League Power Rankings – Week 31

Just when we thought the playoff picture couldn’t get any tighter, three big results completely shook up the standings by the end of Week 31. Spokane Zephyr FC has moved above the playoff line for the first time since early in the fall, Brooklyn FC finally broke its 11-match winless streak, and Tampa Bay Sun FC earned all three points despite playing with 10 players for most of the match. 

The spring has transformed Zephyr into a championship contender. The offense has exploded into a goal scoring machine, averaging 1.72 goals per game and only have been shut out twice. On the defensive end, the team has conceded only 10 goals and goalkeeper Hope Hisey leads the league in clean sheets (nine) and goals-against average (0.94). 

For Brooklyn, not only did it secure the win it needed, but it also dominated Fort Lauderdale United FC in a 4-1 route after only scoring one goal for the entire month of April. While the team is still in fifth place, it got a much-needed result that can create some momentum before it closes out the season at home the last two matches. 

For the first time this season, a team had to compete with 10 players due to a red card, but you wouldn’t have even noticed it based on how Tampa Bay played. Getting the early go-ahead goal from Hannah Keane helped the Sun play with composure to earn a win against Dallas Trinity FC, which now has only a one-point lead over Tampa Bay.

4		 The Sun showed extreme fortitude to play for over 70 minutes at a disadvantage following captain Jordyn Listro’s red card and still come away with the three points. The match also showed the talent of goalkeeper Sydney Schneider, who made four saves and managed the clock well to preserve the clean sheet.

Last Week:
5		 Despite being out of the playoff race, DC Power still plays competitively and has been one of the more entertaining teams to watch, especially with the scoring prowess of Gianna Gourley. If the team can return from the week off and earn a result against Dallas this wekend, it could have huge results on the teams still in the playoff hunt.

8		 A lot of people may have counted Brooklyn out, but getting that huge win over Fort Lauderdale shows this team is not going away easily. Brooklyn looked like the team it was in the fall, pressing high, being aggressive and shutting down its opponents inside the box. It was just what the team needed heading into its final two matches.

3		 Dallas did not come out with the energy it needed on Sunday and failed to take advantage of the opportunity it got playing 11v10 for most of the match. For Trinity to hold 67% of possession and record 14 shots and not come away with a single goal is not going to be good enough if it wants to hold on to second place.
7 Fort Lauderdale United FC

Last Week:
6		 After the previous loss to Carolina Ascent, Fort Lauderdale needed a big response over Brooklyn to try to stay in the top four spots. The team’s defense looked scrambled and unorganized, its offense wasn’t clinical enough, and it came up extremely short. Its saving grace is having a match in hand over every team above it in the standings.

7		 It’s hard for a team to stay locked in defensively after conceding a penalty kick and going down a goal within the first ten minutes of the match. Limiting Spokane to only two goals is better than Lexington’s last few results but is ultimately not enough once again to earn a result.

BKN – Allison Pantuso: The only player in the league with more duels and tackles won than Addie McCain is Allison Pantuso. The center back is the only Brooklyn player to have never left the field, anchoring the team’s defense all season.

LEX – Shea Moyer: Lexington’s captain is the reliable force in the midfield, contributing on both sides of the ball for the Girls in Green. Moyer earned her fifth assist last week, along with three clearances, two tackles and two interceptions.
